    Skybell HD Video Doorbell Review

    Skybell HD Video Doorbell Review

In this day in age, unfortunately, the world doesn’t seem to be as safe as it used to be.  We as homeowners have been forced to take the safety of our families and possessions into our own hands.  Thankfully technology has kept up with the security needs of today!

One of the companies leading the way in home security is Skybell.  Today, we will be doing a review of the Skybell HD Video Doorbell. This doorbell can stream 1080p high definition video of visitors of all kind on your front steps right to your smartphone or tablet!  That’s pretty amazing, but there are lots of HD video doorbells on the market today that can take pictures of visitors at your door.  How do you know this specific Skybell doorbell is the one for you?

    What We Loved

The Skybell HD Video Doorbell, has a lot of great qualities that set it apart from its competitors.  Here’s our list of its greatest assets:

    1. Automatic Photos – This is our favorite thing about this doorbell compared to its competitors. The Skybell doorbell not only takes pictures when someone rings your doorbell, but it uses motion sensor technology to capture and stream the image of anyone (or anything) at your door.  Now you can catch those pesky raccoons red-handed in your trash or stop a would-be burglar in his tracks without any buttons needing to be pressed.
    2. 5X Zoom – This is an issue that to us is often overlooked but Skybell got it right. Many other doorbells on the market only zoom at 1X, which is enough to capture a face right at your door, but what about a face at your mailbox or a license plate of a suspicious vehicle?  The 5X zoom on the Skybell HD Video Doorbell allows for a full view of the front of your home.  This in my opinion makes it as good a security camera!
    3. Monitoring & Recording – Skybell strikes again! The monitoring and recording functions of this doorbell also set it apart from the rest.  At any moment, without triggering motion sensors activating the doorbell, you can live stream the video feed right to your phone.  This gives you complete control over your home, knowing at any time who may be in the driveway or coming up to the door.  And if the button is pressed or motion sensor is triggered, Skybell records and stores the video on a cloud server until you are able to go over the footage yourself.
    4. Night Vision – A simple but very useful characteristic of the Skybell HD Video Doorbell, night vision is a no-brainer for me when it comes to home security cameras, even on the doorbell. Nighttime is when we are all more vulnerable, and it would be a waste, in our opinion, to invest in a doorbell camera without it.
    5. Built-in Speaker – Last, but certainly not least, is the built in speaker that comes standard with this device. Now you can speak to anyone that’s at your door, whether it is a complete stranger or a door-to-door salesman who won’t leave you alone.  On the flipside, it’s great if the pizza deliveryman is early and you’re still in your bathrobe. Not only that, but the person at your door can talk right back!  The ability to have full exchanges with anyone at your door without opening it gives a huge boost to the overall effectiveness of this device. We give this feature a huge thumbs-up!

The Skybell HD video doorbell has a lot of fantastic features, but there is one negative that you should definitely keep in mind before you purchase…

    What We Didn’t Love

This doorbell has one flaw that we have to mention.  It seems that a very strong Wi-Fi signal (as high as 95% strength) is needed for reliable streaming of your video feed.  That being said, this is not reason enough to choose a different doorbell for your home security requirements.  If anything we think it’s a reason to go out and buy a new router!  All kidding aside, make sure to test your router’s signal strength before buying so you can have access to this video doorbell’s HD video stream.

    [quick_offer id=1792]

    Our Verdict

We hope this Skybell HD Video Doorbell review was helpful to you in your quest for a more secure home.  We highly recommend this product to anyone attempting to beef up their home security system and don’t forget that upgrading your Wi-Fi in order to gain access to all the upsides of this doorbell would be worth the investment.

That being said, you should take the safety of your family and possessions very seriously!  Shop around and read customer reviews like this one to find out which one is best for you.  If you’re asking us, though, for the price, the Skybell HD video doorbell is worth every penny.  Go get yours today!

  • Belkin WeMo Light Switch Review

    Belkin WeMo Light Switch Review

The Belkin WeMo light switch is exactly what you would expect from a well-rounded home automation light switch. It’s compatible with most of today’s top smart home hubs including Echo, SmartThings, and Harmony which is great for us who already have a home automation system up and running, otherwise you can connect directly to your Wi-Fi and still get all the features of a remote lighting solution. Beautifully designed this switch currently only comes in white and operates when you tap the push button that illuminates a power light letting you know your switch is on.

Once up and running you not only have the ability to operate your lights from anywhere in the world using your smartphone and tablet, but you also have the ability to assign a lighting schedule for each switch and through the use of IFTTT have specific lights automatically turn on when you enter your home. Some users have gotten creative with the IFTTT features and setup the network to send them a text if they left the house and didn’t turn off all the lights in an attempt to save energy. The price tag, on the other hand, is just high enough at $50 to scare off some of the most frugal consumers, although we were able to find it for $38 which is listed below and is probably the best deal you’re going to currently get. Considering the price tag we would like to see a few more features in the future that are not currently available like dimming capabilities and the ability to operate the switch from our Windows PC.

    [quick_offer id=1571]

    Installation & Setup

The installation is simple and shouldn’t take more than 15 minutes. If you’re not comfortable with the fact of wiring your own switch then we suggest finding a family member or friend to do it for you, whatever route you take just don’t forget to turn off the power from your circuit break before starting. For more information on how to do it yourself, feel free to watch the installation video provided by WeMo. Another thing to keep in mind before even purchasing the switch is that this switch is compatible with any one-way connection lights, but not compatible with three-way connection lights so be sure to check your current switch before ordering. It’s also recommended to use the face plate that is included with the switch or you can use a plastic plate, just try and avoid metal face plates as they may interfere with the Wi-Fi signal. All together installation is as easy as turning off your breaker, removing your old switch and connecting the new one.

After installation is where a few users have had issues. It’s been reported that connecting the switch to the Wi-Fi and software can be glitchy with the users having to try several times to get the switch connected to the network through the app, but once completely installed no problems have been reported and the switch operates smoothly. At this point, you may want to take the time to become familiar with the app, setup your IFTTT recipes and lighting schedules.

    [wpsm_specification]

To conclude our Belkin WeMo light switch review it’s a little disappointing it doesn’t have dimmer capabilities considering the high price tag but keep in mind it’s very cross-compatible with other products, simple to install, nicely designed and works with both your iOS and Android device. So if you have the money to spend we say go for it, your going to get everything you’d expect from a smart home light switch.

  • GE Z-Wave Wireless Lighting Control and Appliance Module Review

GE Z-Wave Wireless Lighting Control and Appliance Module Review

Today we had a chance to review the GE Z-Wave Wireless Lighting Control and Appliance Module to see how it stacks up to its counterparts of Z-Wave energy switches and it did well. Recently we reviewed the Aeon Labs Z-Wave Smart Energy Switch which had an amazing durable design and a very low price, so going into reviewing another Z-Wave energy switch we had a little skepticism, still this switch did not disappoint! Unlike many of its competitors, this switch contains 2 outlets which can help justify the price when you don’t have to purchase two switches. For us the design is a little bulky but it’s still built not to block your lower outlet. The three prong plug is rated to handle up to 600 watts which is enough to handle your average table lamp but is much less that of the Aeon Labs Z-Wave Smart Energy Switch which can handle 1875W at 15A, you won’t be switching on or off any AC units or heaters.

    [quick_offer id=1447]

As with any Z-Wave certified device, this will easily connect with your Z-Wave controllers like ADT Pulse, Nexia Home Intelligence, SmartThings Home and Wink controller by the push of just an “Add Device” and the built-in button. Although this is a very popular device with lots of positive reviews from customers who have made the purchase, one thing that is noted is this switch does not give you the option to dim your lighting, even though it is target toward the lighting market. Also, like many Z-Wave devices, this can act as a repeater to grow your mesh network. If you have another Z-Wave device that is out of reach of your hub, this switch will repeat the signal from the hub so you can control your device that was out of distance. All together this is a great device with many very satisfied customers with an average user rating of 4.5/5 and it will make a great addition to your smart home.

  • Neato Botvac D75 / D80 / D85 Review

    Neato Botvac D75 / D80 / D85 Review

When people think robotic vacuums the first thing to come to mind more often than not is the Roomba and they are quick to dismiss many of it’s competitors, not this time. For many reasons the Neato robotic vacuums are taking the lead, especially when it comes to the D series. This smart little guy comes loaded with features including autonomous charging, laser-guided room mapping, extra-large dirt bin and precise edge technology giving it the ability to clean corners better than most other robot vacuums.

The Neato robots are also known for their ability to map out rooms quicker due to it’s patented Naeto Botvision that for the most part maps the edges of the room first before cleaning the center area unlike it’s counter-parts that seems to randomly zig-zag across the room for it’s mapping causing the robot to go over some areas multiple times. This technique not only saves time but also allows to robot to create those parallel vacuum lines everyone loves after a fresh vacuuming.

    [quick_offer id=1426]

    Features and design

Now if you have used Neato’s later models like the Neato’s Botvac 85 then you should be familiar with the LCD screen. The difference now is that the screen is color and more sensitive controls. Other upgrades from it’s later models include a more capacity for dust collection at 24 oz (0.7 liters), reduced noise levels and more efficient bristles and brushes that are not only 50% larger but also can be easily detached for fast replacement. The new filters in combination with the new SpinFlow power clean system also allows for better air flow when capturing debris and dirt thus better performance and battery life. The batteries themselves are made of a nickle metal hybrid and are capable of charging at both 110v and 220v. When on standby the robots power consumption is 1w and 2w when charging.

    Amazon User Reviews:

    [wpsm_specification]

Another notable feature mentioned earlier is the Naeto’s D shape that separates its self from the competition by getting into corners better than the other round robots. Now some drawbacks on later model robots included having trouble with stairs, this is another issue the D serieshas overcome by having the ability to avoid falling down stairs by simply stopping and turning around and adding the stairs to it’s map.

Some available accessories include hyper allergenic filters that catch those small particles for people sensitive to allergens. Boundary markers are also available to tape off areas you may not your robot to go like the dog bowl area or kids room with legos everywhere. One more useful accessory is the specialized brushes. The combo brush is designed to operate on several types of flooring while providing improved suction for pet hair and reduced noise on hardwood floors. Other brushes include the D series side brush the cleans corners and edges more effectively, and the spiral blade that cleans hardwood floors with less noise than the brush options.

To wrap up our Neato Botvac D75 / D80 / D85 review with a final thought, the new D seris by Neato really came out ahead of the competition when it comes to both price and performance. With some of the other robotic vacuums costing more than twice as much at $1200, we think this is a steal. The only decision is which model will work best for you. If you live in a small apartment and have no pets the D75 should do just fine. Anything larger or if you have a lot of pet hair then you will need to start looking into the D80 or D85 while considering the special brushes to tackle that hair.

  • Aeon Labs Z-Wave Smart Energy Switch Review

Aeon Labs Z-Wave Smart Energy Switch Review

We had the opportunity to check out the buzz behind the Aeon Labs Z-Wave Smart Energy Switch and really figured out why so many customers love this product. The short version is, it’s simple, durable and does what is expected. This device gives you the ability to add Z-Wave wireless control to any plug-in appliance within 100 feet of your controller whether the Smartthings Hub, Wink Hub, Mi Casa Verde VeraLite or the Revolv home automation hub to name a few.
    [quick_offer id=1450]

Along with supporting up to 1875W, 15A devices, the Aeon Labs Z-Wave Smart Energy Switch also serves as a repeater for your other Z-Wave devices. Why is this relevant and what does it mean? When a signal is transmitted from your console/hub, each signal only has so much strength to make it the distance necessary to your intended target. Let’s say you have a front porch light that is too far from your console/hub to receive a strong signal. Place this energy switch somewhere between the intended porch light and your hub and you have a repeater that will repeat, create a mesh network and strengthen the signal so it makes it to your porch. Many Z-Wave devices offer this ability; just make sure it’s an option before making the purchase if this is your intent.

    Amazon User Reviews:

    [wpsm_specification]

The hardware itself is built to last, with a similar construction to that of heavy duty extension cord used on construction sites. Solid to the touch, the cables are thick but soft and the two ends are heavy duty, you should have no problems with wear and tear. The rest of the device is one solid build aside from the button on the side that illuminates when the switch is on. Setup is also a breeze, dependent on your hub you generally just need to search for a device from your controller then press the blue button on the switch to finish the setup. That’s it!

  • GE Link Wireless A19 LED Light Bulb Review

GE Link Wireless A19 LED Light Bulb Review

The Wink compatible GE Link Wireless A19 light bulb fits right in with the rest of Wink’s line of budget friendly but rather glitchy smart home products. If you can get the bulb connected and to stay connected, this bulb gives a better color rendering than any other bulb within its price. Being compatible Quirky, Dropcam, Honeywell, Lutron and Amazon Echo it’ll serve its purpose providing 800 lumens of 2,700k soft white light for a lifespan of 25,000.
    [quick_offer id=1456]

Unfortunately that’s about the extent of the GE A19 LED Light bulb. As mentioned its Wink compatible so as to be expected the Wink Hub is required. Unlike its counterparts it’s slightly less energy efficient, running 12 watts as compared to the 9-11 watt average within its category giving it an estimated yearly cost to run of a $1.45 (Based on 3 hours per day at $0.11 per kWh). On top of all this, it seems to be a pretty common occurrence for users to experience network failures and adding the bulb to the Wink network is a tedious task all in itself. It starts with having to physically turn on each light bulb, wait for the app to recognize it, then going through several help screens before moving onto the next bulb. As you can imagine, if you have a decent size house this can turn into a pretty daunting task.

    Amazon User Reviews:

    [wpsm_specification]

Wrapping up our GE Link Wireless A19 LED Light Bulb review we would like to point out that although it’s catching some heat, we still recommend giving it a try if you are on a budget. It emits great lighting for any room, it is low cost and although some users have had difficulty during the setup, many users are very happy with the performance of this bulb. With smart home automation technology still on the rise, a few glitches here and there are to be expected. But after the initial setup, this bulb serves its purpose.

  • Netatmo Weather Station Review

    Netatmo Weather Station Review

The Netatmo Weather Station comes with two modules that monitor temperature, humidity, carbon dioxide, and noise levels both inside and outside your home. With a $149 price tag, you may need some justification on making the plunge into at home meteorology. Along with your two weather stations, you receive a lifetime free personal account for your data. Catching a lot of heat from other reviewers, many can’t justify the expensive price tag when much of this data is available through free smartphone apps from respectable weather monitoring services. We disagree. If you are in the market for at home weather stations then you already have your justifications and this will deliver.

Easy setup through Wi-Fi, fully integrated with your IFTTT services, compatible with Apple Home Kit, Amazon Echo, Ubi, Philips, Lutron, Smart Things, Logitech and Vera, you are looking at a very well rounded weather station. For example, through the use of the VERA
Netatmo plugin you’re able to close blinds based on your indoor temperatures, set windows to open or close depending on humidity and CO2 levels and control your garden irrigation on how much rain has fallen in the past 24 hours.

    [/wpsm_cons][/wpsm_column]

    [wpsm_divider top=”20px” bottom=”20px” style=”dotted”]

    The Hardware

The Netatmo weather modules are very nicely designed 6 inch (indoor) and 4 inch (outdoor) aluminum cylinders that contain the sensors required to record your data. Both cylinders have no buttons or dials, although the indoor sensor allows you to tap the top of your module when you wish to take a reading. Powering the indoor module is a Micro-USB port on the back and then two AAA batteries are included to power your outdoor module that needs to be replaced yearly.

Setting up your system takes minutes. Plug in the USB, drop in the batteries and download the app. Once the app is installed it will walk you through the setup process, starting with copying your Wi-Fi settings from your phone to avoid having to choose a network and enter any passwords. After you finish the walk-through, the modules will give you a green glow of approval that they are ready to start tracking your local climate data. Altogether the setup takes just a few minutes.

    [quick_offer id=1453]

    The App

    81izLISPVJL._SL1500_

The app itself is designed to deliver the mass amount of data as efficiently as possible. The visually appealing design presents your indoor and outdoor temperatures, humidity, CO2 and noise levels with the tablet version delivering your forecast on the same screen. Tilt your device over and now you have a graph displaying your historical data all in one simple gesture while giving you the ability to navigate with swipes and pinches. As mentioned the app also offers 7-day weather forecasting provided by MeteoGroup that will project all the necessary temperatures and rainfalls.
To wrap up our Netatmo Weather Station Review we would like to note the increased functionality through IFTTT that holds limitless possibilities. We have come across users setting alerts to be sent to their smartphones when a temperature reaches a set limit, which can come in handy in say a wine cellar where you need to keep a consistent temperature. Anyone of Netatmo’s fourteen sensors can set off an IFTTT trigger allowing you to set rules for just about anything.

  • Kidde RF-SM-DC Wireless Smoke Alarm Review

Kidde RF-SM-DC Wireless Smoke Alarm Review

The Kidde RF-SM-DC Wireless Smoke Alarm is really an amazing smoke detector based on not only our opinion but the hundreds of other reviews set by customers who already made the purchase. We also want to add that out of those hundreds of reviews we only found a single 1-star review. The major highlight of this alarm is the fact that it interconnects using a 433MHz radio frequency throughout your home to other Kidde Wireless Smoke Alarms. This especially comes into use when you have oil engulfed in flames in the kitchen and you don’t hear the alarm because you’re watching your Saturday morning cartoons in the bedroom way at the other end of the house, because only the single kitchen smoke detector will go off if they are not interconnected. With interconnected alarms you get the convenience of being notified immediately because the second your kitchen alarm starts going off, your bedroom alarm goes off too. This especially comes in handy if you have a detached garage, workshop or enclosed gazebo. Also, just a reminder that many newer homes require interconnected alarms.

    [quick_offer id=1444]

Another great feature is that these alarms are battery powered making installation a breeze compared to a decade ago when installing interconnected alarms would have meant rewiring the house. Unlike most alarms these also have a smart touch button to quickly and temporarily silence those nuisance alarms for when you leave the pizza in the oven a little too long. In addition they utilize ionization sensing technology which is built to better detect invisible fire particles sooner than photoelectric alarms which are built to better detect visible particles mostly associated with smoldering fires. Kidde does strongly recommend you utilize both ionization and photoelectric alarms to help ensure maximum detection of various alarms.

All together this is a simple, low-cost alarm that may not fit into our category as a smart alarm, but still deserves recognition because of its price point, easy setup and advanced “dumb alarm” features. Check out some of our other reviews on smart alarms with more features like connecting to our smart home network for off-site testing, notifications and control.

  • RainMachine HD-12 Forecast Sprinkler Review

    RainMachine HD-12 Forecast Sprinkler Review

Today we review the RainMachine HD-12 Forecast Sprinkler system. This amazing irrigation control system comes in 8, 12 and 16 zones and depending on how large your lawn and shrubs are you may need to get a second system if you require more than the 16 zones. If you do opt-in for the second system then you will be happy to hear that the systems will auto-sync their clocks over your Wi-Fi network to make setting your zones a breeze.

The RainMachine unit contains a 6.5″ touch screen Android-powered display that really gives it a leg up on its competition; this also makes setup very simple without having to mess with tiny dials or buttons that generally offer slow performance. After connecting your zone wires and common wire, you’ll authenticate your Wi-Fi then move onto entering your address. The reason for entering your address is what makes the RainMachine a forecast sprinkler, it immediately syncs up with NOAA weather service so it can properly forecast and adjust its sprinkler time based on how much rain it’s predicting. Say NOAA is expecting rain on Thursday, RainMachine will determine how much rain you will receive then adjust its watering habits based on that data, for instance maybe it’ll only produce 26% of its normal irrigation based on that data saving you buckets of money. Also, for those of you who don’t NOAA, they are the real deal when it comes to weather forecasting, but just in case the device utilizes several data sources for increased accuracy. What does all this mean to you? This means a reduction of up to 25-50% of your irrigation water allowing for the unit to pay for its self within 2 years.

    [quick_offer id=1439]

A few other great features we came across in our RainMachine HD-12 Forecast Sprinkler Review is its ability to update its own firmware over the Wi-Fi making those days of USB updating or direct connection updating a thing of the past. Another amazing feature is the ability to access your unit remotely, no more having to go out to the shed or garage every time you want to make a change. This can be done through both your desktop computer and mobile device. The mobile app allows you to set zones, watering times, view your watering history, check your watering forecast, and update some basic settings. The app especially comes into use for when you want to walk around your yard and manually activate zones to check for damaged sprinkler heads. You can also access the on-board web-server within RainMachine through your desktop computer if you don’t want to fiddle with the touch screen.

    61XV+UNh5wL._SL1200_

All together the RainMachine HD-12 Forecast Sprinkler is currently the number one choice for users that are looking for a smart irrigation control, although it’s just a matter of time till we get a system that’ll offer the same feature but is Z-Wave compatible. Hopefully soon.

  • Ring Wi-Fi Enabled Video Doorbell Review

Ring Wi-Fi Enabled Video Doorbell Review

The Ring Wi-Fi Enabled Video Doorbell is exactly what the name says, a doorbell that streams video that is built by BOT Home Automation. In short, we like it and many users that have made the purchase have had a lot of nice things to say. On the other hand it does have its short comings.

    Setup

After you purchase ring you will be pleasantly surprised to see it comes with everything necessary for installation including tools, drill bits, tiny level and even caulk. When installing Ring you have two options, battery powered that will need to be recharged once a year or hard wired which taps into your existing doorbell wiring (this is recommended). Now some user reviews have shown that the battery quickly dropped 3-4% after just a few hours of use leaving skepticism on the promised 1 year battery life, but after much research we haven’t found a single case of the battery falling short on performance. We believe this hit is mostly from setup and people playing with their fancy new video toy. One power saving feature Ring included is making sure the device only connects to your network when it is in use, cutting down on unnecessary juice and Wi-Fi bandwidth. Continuing with the setup it’s now time to install your Ring app, create an account, pick a device and confirm your address. Afterward you’ll be instructed to push the orange button on the back of the faceplate to link the device to your network marking the completion of your Ring installation. All together setup generally takes 5-15 minutes depending on if you hard wire or use batteries.

    [quick_offer id=1436]

    Hardware and Features

Once installed you will see why so many people like this device. Located near the top sits the 180-degree HD camera that delivers Ring’s 720p video stream. Next to the camera you now have a motion sensor giving you the ability to stream a live audio and video feed whenever someone is at your door without having to wait for them to push the button, which also makes a great security feature. Along with the motion sensor you have the option of setting the sensitivity for different zones anywhere from 5-30 feet. You will find the importance of this feature after you get a few false alarms from your motion detector. Below the camera and sensor you have your round LED light surrounding your doorbell button making it easy for your guest to find at night. In addition you also have speakers built into the bottom of the device allowing you to listen to your guest and respond back if need be with clear audio coming in and out for both you and your visitor.

    61V96XPSZfL._SL1024_

Now the Ring Video Doorbell comes with the option of cloud storage for your video that will run you $3 a month or $30 a year if you choose to use it. BOT Home Automation also stresses that they stand behind their product with a lifetime purchase protection that replaces your device in the off chance it were to get stolen. One thing we do recommend when purchasing this product is that you have a strong Wi-Fi connection leading up to your door. Some users have reported a delay between ringing the doorbell and the push notification reaching your smart phone, some delays lasting up to 5-30 seconds. This can be avoided with a strong signal and some recommend that hard wiring the device also helps. We also would have liked to see more integration with smart home hubs and maybe an IFTTT channel which the folks at Ring say they are looking into for the future. More features to be expected in the future are weather sensors to collect data like temperature, humidity and barometric pressure. For $199 we still think Ring is a great purchase simply because of the added value you get from the security features alone, but if Bot sticks with their promises of improvements in future roll outs then this definitely has the potential to be a grand slam.
